ACHIEVEMENTS:
Don Carey started cycling at the age of 47 when a friend suggested he might consider riding a bike to improve his leg strength following disc surgery.
He agreed, bought a bike and began a rather interesting bicycling career which started with a ride around the block near his home in Camarillo.
Eleven years later he was competing in National bicycling events. At first he began riding longer distances with his friend and as his strength improved he entered events in Ventura County. In 1981 he joined the United States Cycling Federation (USCF), was issued a racing license and began to enter age-graded road races and time trials in the Central and Southern California District. In 1986 Don competed in the National Time Trial and Road Race events in Indianapolis.

TIME TRIALS
His best result was setting a 40km National Record of 58 min. 27 sec. 625.5 mph avg. speed) at Moriarity, N.M. in 1988. This lowered the record for a 60 year old man by about 3 min. Don also won the National Time Trial in Elberta, Utah in 1987 with a time of 59 min. 8 sec.
His first USCF time trial event was in 1981 at Los Alamos, CA in 1981 where he won the 40km time trial in 1 hr & 39 sec. Over the next six years he entered the Central & Southern California District time trials which he won five times. Other local events included time trials on the Rincon, Mulholland & Ojai to Pine Mountain.

ROAD RACES:
Don’s first USCF road race was held at Los Alamos, CA in 1981 where he placed 4th. Over the next 6 years he entered 17 USCF races & won 7. His best result at the Nationals was 4th place at Brown County State Park, Indiana in 1986. He also entered several non USCF events including the Sea to Summit (Ventura to Mt. Pinos), Desert to Mt.
