Harry “Cap” Trotter

UCLA Coach

Born in 1890 at Kansas City, Kansas.

Attended Santa Paula High School where he excelled in track competing in the sprints, shot put, pole vault, hurdles and the hammer throw.

National Y.M.C.A. Discus Champion, 130 ft.

Enrolled in his junior year of high school at U.S.C. Academy. The rules permitted members of U.S.C. Academy to compete on U.S.C.’s varsity teams.

Freshman year was Coach Dean Cromwell’s first baseball captain.

Sophomore year was Coach Dean Cromwell’s track captain.

Excelled in the high jump and shot put for U.S.C., setting a school record in the shot put that stood for 19 years until broken by the great Bud Houser.

Excelled as an outfielder for U.S.C. baseball team.

After college, he competed in track for the San Francisco Olympic Club.

Played professional baseball for the St. Louis Browns.

COACHING CAREER
1916 – Head football coach at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles winning the league championship.
1917-19 – Head football coach at Pasadena High School where he developed several future college greats including Edwin C. “Babe” Horrell.
1920-21 – Head football coach of U.C.L.A.
1920-47 – Head track coach at U.C.L.A. where he guided U.C.L.A. to national prominence. He developed many national and international athletes including Jackie Robinson and Olympians – Jimmy LuValle, George Jefferson and Craig Dixon.
