Joe graduated from Camarillo High School after a stunning three-sport career in Football, Basketball and Baseball. As a senior in Football he was the Scorpions MVP, the Marmonte League MVP and his team was the CIF champion. He was both the L.A. Times Player of the Year and CIF Player of the Year. As a quarterback he threw for a career 6,064 yards and his fifty-one touchdown passes was a Camarillo H.S. record.
In Baseball that year, he was the Marmonte League MVP, an All CIF selection and the L.A. Times Player of the Year. Joe accepted a dual Baseball/Football scholarship to Stanford University where he earned a B.A. in History. At Stanford he played Football for three seasons.
He was a quarterback on a PAC 10 Championship team and played against Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl.
In Baseball Joe played in two College World Series, was an All-American three times, All PAC 10 three times and was the twelfth pick in the first round of the 2000 Baseball draft. He was selected by the Chicago White Sox and was given a 5.3 million dollar signing bonus.
As a professional he played for eleven years in the White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Florida Marlins organizations. Some highlights of his minor league career include being the MVP of the Southern League All Star game, being selected to the Topps Minor League All Star team and playing for the Team USA which won a silver medal in the 2001 World Cup in Taipei. He is the Charlotte Knights all-time leader in hits, home runs and RBIs. As a major leaguer he hit a home run in his second at bat in the big leagues. Joe also hit the longest home run in US Cellular Field history (504 feet). In 2006 he led the Florida Marlins in pinch hits.
He retired from professional Baseball in 2011. Joe lives in Charlotte North Carolina with his wife Erin and children, Ellie and Charlie. He works as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual.
