John “Jay” Blackstone

Trainer

Born January 20,1896 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri

Jay was officially appointed trainer for Ventura Junior College in 1940.

He was working for the district prior to this as custodian and athletic equipment man. At this time, Ventura Junior College and Ventura High School shared the same campus. Jay was trainer for both schools until 1955 when Ventura College moved to their own campus at which time he moved with them.

Jay learned his trade by attending seminars and constantly studying the latest techniques. He was always up to date, and there was hardly an athletic injury that he was not knowledgeable about and knew how to treat.

Jay retired from the college after 22 years on March 1, 1962.

During his retirement, he found time to help out at the then new Buena High School.

When St. Bonaventura High School started athletics, Jay became their trainer as an unpaid volunteer. He continued in this capacity for eleven years.
Jay was always positive, always caring, and like a second father to many.

A kinder, more gentle man would be hard to find. He was respected and admired by the thousands of persons who were fortunate to know him.
