Richard “Toolie” Palmer

Fillmore High School Coach & Athletic Director

Born in Fillmore, California April 16, 1915. Educated in Fillmore schools graduating from Fillmore High School in 1933.

Attended Ventura College, University of San Francisco, graduating from Santa Barbara State in 1938.

Excelled in football, basketball and track at Fillmore High School.

First ‘T’ formation quarterback In Ventura County while playing for Coach Red Kennedy at Fillmore High School.

Excelled in football, basketball and track at Ventura College. In football he played ‘T’ formation quarterback for Coach Joe Buckmaster. In basketball he was the second leading scorer in the conference. Selected all-conference at forward. Ran the 880 in track.

Santa Barbara State competed in football, basketball and track. Elected captain and Most Valuable Player of the basketball team in his senior year.

Received the C.I.F. Merit Award for contribution to basketball.

After college played and coached A.A.U. basketball.

Coached basketball at Fillmore High School for 17 years. Won Frontier League championship 5 of 6 years.

Basketball teams of 1952 and 1954 placed fourth in C.I.F.

Co-founder of the Fillmore Basketball Tournament.

Palmer was one of the outstanding officials of the Ventura Officials Association, and was frequently assigned to officiate C.I.F. championship basketball games.
