Charles “Red” Barrett

Born in Santa Barbara, California, February 14, 1915.

Attended Simi Valley High School where he earned thirteen letters in three sports- basketball, baseball, and tennis.

Member of the championship baseball and basketball teams

Won individual championships in tennis, handball, and football distance throwing- 60 yards

Earned rank of Captain in the military- Played on military team which won a baseball championship

Established a Major League Record of throwing 58 pitches in a 2-0 victory against Cincinnatti in one hour six minutes

1946- Led the National League with twenty-three victories, twenty-four complete games and 284.2 innings. Pitched with the Boston Braves and St. Louis Cardinals

Appeared in two World Series, with the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Boston Red Sox in 1946 and with the Boston Braves vs. the Cleveland Indians in 1948

Gould coached for 38 seasons at Stanford University…He had 17 NCAA men’s tennis team titles and 50 All-Americans…He was named as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association coach of the decade for the 1980s and 1990s…Gould was named to the Pac-12 Hall of Honor, Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame and the United States Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

Born January 7, 1921 in Morgan Hill, California

Upon discharge in 1946, he established a 42 year relationship with the Oxnard Press Courier

Hal was the sports editor for forty years during which time he gained the respect of the many county coaches for his positive and accurate reporting

Recipient of numerous awards over the years, including awards from both the Oxnard Elks and the Knights of Columbus in appreciation of outstanding news coverage and services rendered in the interest of sports

Received a special recognition award from the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame in 1988
